Backstory

Edin Schwarzwasser was abandoned as a baby at a church orphanage and grew up with no memory of his parents. He shared his fate with other children who had lost their families in the Eberron war. His childhood was spent in the lower districts of Sharn, surviving through petty theft and scams. Since no one wanted to take him in, he remained under the church’s care—eventually becoming their errand boy for less-than-holy dealings. Clever enough to adapt, Edin started playing along. He followed the example of his superiors, bending the faith’s rules to his advantage.

Now, Edin is pragmatic and self-serving, treating blessings and healing as commodities to be traded. He sees himself as someone who truly understands the "real nature" of the church. Loyal only when it benefits him, he has no qualms about throwing others under the bus for his own gain.

Organizations

The Church... ...that Edin assists is deeply entangled in various underground dealings and power struggles. Because of this, his superior, Bishop Yonas, often has dealings with the local mafia—whether through cooperation or unresolved debts. Ever since Edin got caught up in these affairs, Yonas has been making him carry out dubious tasks—for the church, for himself, and sometimes even for the mafia.

The Mafia... ...stores smuggled goods in the church and frequently calls upon its assistance for certain transports or other favors.

Allies

Bishop Yonas—despite forcing Edin to carry out his orders. He keeps an eye on him, watches over him, and ensures his safety as long as Edin continues to be useful to him.

Edin knows many people in Sharn. Nearly every one of his contacts has been exploited for his benefit at some point. Those who aren't resentful—who play the same game and understand the nature of being a pawn—are always happy to share a drink with him when the job allows it.

Enemies

He knows many in Sharn, has helped many, but has also deceived just as many. Those who hold grudges have become his enemies.

Other

He enjoys misquoting his church’s holy scriptures:

"As it is written in the sacred texts: ‘The path to prosperity is paved with fair deals and open coin purses.’ That’s how it goes, right?"

"Greedy? Oh no, no, I’m just devout! Waukeen teaches us: ‘There is no shame in gathering wealth, as long as you can carry it.’ I’m simply following her word—shame not everyone does."

"Ah, I believe Waukeen had a word for offers like this. What was it again? Ah yes—‘insulting.’ Care to reconsider?"

"Vulgæa, Chapter 4, Verse 13: Shut your mouth, you piece of filth, or I’ll have to silence it with the holy light of the church!"

"Yolmir, Chapter 7, Verse 9: I’ll kill you, you rotting pile of garbage!"

"Goddess Waukeen isn’t here right now—she’s at the tavern, gambling and relieving people of their last coin."
